June started off with a handful of gray, rainy days, and as any Floridian knows, rainy weather brings the humidity. While many of us have still been spending most of our time indoors, our trips outside to walk our dogs or check the mail feel like we’re swimming. Here’s the thing: in some ways, we’re lucky. Humid weather can help keep our skin soft and supple, especially when compared to drier climates. Still, it does come with its own set of issues.
When your skin feels damp in humid weather, it’s not an indicator that you’re sweating more -- it’s just that the sweat stays on your skin longer since it’s not evaporating as quickly. As you know, sweat can carry bacteria, which can cause trouble on your skin. Here are our tips to help you stay glowing, not greasy, in humid weather.
Acids in Cleansers
It should go without saying that you need to start and end every day by cleansing your face, especially if you wore makeup that day. An exfoliating cleanser with salicylic acid, like ZO Skin Health’s Exfoliating Cleanser, can help slough off dead skin cells to prevent them from clogging up your skin. Just be careful that you don’t use too many harsh acids on your skin or you may cause it to overproduce oil.
Don’t Forget to Moisturize
Just because your skin feels moist doesn’t mean it’s moisturized! Moisturizing your skin after you cleanse helps create a protective barrier, protecting your skin from elemental damage. If you’re worried about shine and oil production, look for an oil-free moisturizer and use it as the last step in your skincare routine.
SPF is a Must-Have
Damage from the sun can leave your skin vulnerable to other skin conditions. Always, always, always (!!!) use an SPF before you go into the sun. And before you ask, no, the SPF in your foundation or tinted moisturizer doesn’t count. Look for an SPF-based moisturizer or apply a mineral sunscreen for ultimate protection.
Skincare in humid conditions may take a little adjustment, but it’s far from impossible! The start of summer is a great time to check in with your esthetician about your skincare goals. A facial is the perfect way to jumpstart your new summertime routine and give you a blank slate on which to work.
