Fillers have come a long way since their inception. While it used to be that you could unfailingly tell when someone had been treated with fillers, now they can be used to create a subtly refreshed appearance by gently adding needed volume to key areas. However, as with any cosmetic treatment, even something that promises immediate results, you may still be able to see the telltale signs of injections. How do you avoid bruising and swelling at injection sites?
The first step in avoiding filler bruising is by going to a cosmetic specialist you know you can trust. Our own Dr. Samano is recognized by Galderma as an injections trainer and administrator, so you know you’re in good hands when you book your appointment with us. However, even the steadiest hand can leave a little bruising. Here are some steps you can take to avoid needle marks and swelling at the site:
- Before your treatment, check with your administrator to see what kinds of medications you should discontinue prior to your injections. Most professionals recommend discontinuing regular aspirin and ibuprofen treatments for about a week before your injections, but check with your doctor to be sure about what’s on the list. If you’re prone to heavy bruising, you may be able to take an arnica supplement the day before your fillers.
- Check with your doctor about the types of numbing creams they have available. Some numbing agents are designed to constrict the blood vessels at the site, thus making bruising less likely. Even if you don’t need the numbing cream for comfort, it may help to make your recovery time more bearable. You may need to arrive early for your appointment if you opt for the numbing agent to give it time to absorb.
- After your treatment, avoid heavy exercise, sweating, and sun exposure for at least 48 hours. Each of these may exacerbate the initial swelling and irritation that form on site after your injections. Your physician should be able to recommend the proper aftercare supplements for your unique treatments, but a good rule of thumb is to make sure you’re applying the proper sun protection after any cosmetic treatment.
As we mentioned before, the first step in ensuring you have a comfortable filler experience with a minimal healing process is to select the right physician for your needs. A gentle touch and precise application both help to reduce the chance of bruising and swelling on site. New to fillers? Schedule a consultation with Dr. Samano and he’ll put your mind at ease.
