As we shift gears for the fall season, it’s time to think about reversing the sun damage of summer. If you’re a native Floridian, or even if you’ve only been here for a year or two, we’re betting you’ve been outside without sunscreen at least once. Sun damage is no joke, and just one round of sunburn can leave lasting, visible damage on your skin. Now that the days are starting to cool off just a little, it’s a great time to think about treatments to reverse sun damage so your skin can heal through the fall and winter months.
One of our favorite treatments for removing sun damage is IPL. Short for Intense Pulsed Light, IPL uses a concentrated beam of broad-spectrum light to penetrate the skin and stimulate your body’s natural healing factors. IPL can be used to treat a wide range of common issues, from acne scarring to fine lines and wrinkles. Today, however, we want to focus on IPL treatments for sun damage.
When you book your consultation with the Winter Park aestheticians at Samano Aesthetics, they’ll probably tell you that you need between 3 and 5 IPL sessions to see real results. Here’s a brief timeline of your IPL treatments:
- First Treatment: When you go in for your first treatment, your aesthetician will go over your target areas with the IPL device, gauging your pain tolerance at the same time. IPL treatments can be a little uncomfortable; many patients describe it as the feeling of a rubber band being snapped against your skin. After your treatment, you’ll probably notice some dark spots that look like coffee grounds rising to the surface of your skin. These wash away as your skin heals over the next few days.
- Second Treatment: You’ll notice more lightening with each treatment, and your aesthetician may be able to skip a few areas if they’ve considerably improved. Your physician may also choose to pair your IPL treatment with a skin resurfacing treatment based on your unique needs and aesthetic goals. We love pairing the Palomar ICON 1540 with our IPL treatments for truly rejuvenated skin.
- Third treatment and beyond: As your skin continues to heal from each session and from prior damage, sunspots will become lighter. Your aesthetician will monitor your progress to determine how many sessions you should have. Generally, you should space your treatments at least 4 weeks apart to give your skin time to recover after each session.
When IPL stimulates your body’s healing factors at a deep level, your skin is able to push out that excess pigmentation that comes from sun damage, leaving sunspots lighter each time. It’s a great treatment with minimal downtime, making it a great option as compared to a peel.
